Research v. Sales

Several sponsors mention having a distinct line or separation between their research and sales functions - but have never elaborated on the rationale or regulatory basis behind it. Can someone explain this further? For the most part, most sales people bring this up and do not want to get involved too much in referring a site for potential studies, inquiring about recruitment, etc. - but we have one sponsor where this does not appear to be a concern, which makes me concerned.
